I was born and raised in Manila, the main city of the Philippine islands. I went to the United States in February 2001 to pursue a different life; a career in health and fitness.
I started as a humble personal trainer for David Barton Gym in Manhattan, where after 2 years of New York living, I moved out West for a management opportunity with Equinox Fitness Clubs at their 1st site in Pasadena, California.
After 4 years of teaching group fitness classes, training clients, and successfully managing their personal training program, I was tasked to open Equinox’ premiere Century City club in 2006. There, I served as Personal Training Manager of the company’s VIP-level, wellness coaching program called Tier-4 (T4), the first of its kind on the West Coast.
I supervised the T4 program successfully for 2 years, proving its viability outside its original New York boutique concept called “E” in Columbus Circle.
From here, I started questioning the extent to which I was living out my passion, and easily found myself returning to 1-on-1 coaching and program design for group fitness classes.
Today, I’m living my ideal life: I’m doing what I love, I have all I’ve ever wanted, and so many fun projects & opportunities keep coming my way, which I consider happy bonuses.
I know that a lot of this is because I decided to CHOOSE to be happy with what I have and where I am, versus choosing to do things that “they” say are supposed to make you happy.
Regularly, I “tour” the various Equinox clubs to coach classes. I travel around LA to work with VIP clients who are fun to work with, whom I also consider dear friends. On occasion, I consult for business owners toward developing fitness programs in their clubs.
Along the way, I’ve been actively employed as a fitness consultant and expert for Nautilus, Inc. assisting in product development, program building, and client consultation for their product lines, under the Schwinn, Pearl Izumi, and Bowflex brands.
I’ve also presented innovative classes for the Body-and-Mind conferences, and the IDEA World Fitness Convention in 2007 (the most internationally known fitness conference in the field).
Currently certified by the American College of Sports Medicine as a Health/Fitness Specialist (H/FS), and by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), I’m constantly learning and consider myself forever the student, while I play the role of coach/teacher.
My degree in Management Engineering at the Ateneo de Manila University, and ten (10) years of management and fitness consulting and coaching experience bring me much qualification in various aspects of the fitness field :I can assess the efficacy of an individual’s fitness coaching program; conduct a motivating and effective group fitness class; choreograph a visually appealing and physically challenging fitness routine; and analyze & troubleshoot a company’s fitness operation profile (sales, marketing, product quality, and daily operations).
All in all, I’m a “DELF” of all trades … I don’t just do these things, I do them very well (to the best of my ability), without claiming complete mastery of any of it. No one should be of such status that they can no longer learn.
